The Ugly Duck

It was beautiful in the country, it was summer-time, the wheat was yellow, the oats were green, the hay was stacked up in the green meadows, and the stork display on his long red legs, they said in Egypt, the language he had learned from his mother. The fields and meadows were surrounded by thick forests and a deep lake was in the mid-woods. Yes, it's beautiful in the country!
The sunshine fell warmly surrounded to an old mansion by a deep river, and from the walls to the edge of the water grew great burdock leaves, so high that children were able to maintain among them, are without being noticed. This place was so wild and lonely than the thickest part of the wood, and selected for that reason had a duck to make its nest there. She was sitting on her eggs, but the joy they had felt at first was now almost gone because it had been so long and had so few visitors, the other ducks swim preferentially on the channels under the seats burdock leaves gossip with her.
Finally the eggs one cracked ", Tchick, Tchick!" All eggs were alive, and appeared a small head at a time. "Quack quack," said the duck and all stood up as best she could, she looked over at the green leaves, and is as good for the green eyes, her mother allowed them to look as long as they pleased.
"How big is the world!" said the little ones, for their present situation is very different from their former limits, while still found in the eggshells.
"Do you imagine they are all on the world?" said the mother! "It goes far beyond the other side of the garden, to the parson's field, but I've never been there, you are all here." And then she stood up. "No, I did not get all of the largest egg still lies there. How long will this take?" And then she sat down again.
"Well, as you get on?" asked an old duck.
"The one egg is holding me so long," said the mother, "it will not break, but you should see the other-it the prettiest little ducklings that I have seen in all my days, you're all like her father, -! the ne'er-do guy, "he was not even to visit me."
"Let me see the egg that will not break," said the old duck, "it depends, it is a turkey egg, I was cheated in the same way once myself, and I had such problems with the little ones;. For they were afraid of the water and I could not there. I called and complained, but it was nothing. But let me see the egg, oh yes, be sure that a turkey egg. Leave it and teach the other kids swim. "
"I think I will sit a little longer," said the duck. "I was sitting for so long, so I spend the harvest here."
"It is not my thing," said the old duck, and away she waddled.
The great egg burst at last, "Tchick, Tchick," said the little girl, and it turned out, but alas! how big and ugly it was! The duck stared at it? "This is a large, strong creature," she said, "none of the other at all, as it is, it may be a young turkey Well, we'll soon find out it has to go into the water, although I push it to me. "
The next day there was beautiful weather and the sun was warm on the green leaves, when the mother duck with her whole family went down to the channel; plump she went into the water, "quack quack," she cried, and a duckling after another jumped on the water over his head, but all came back and swam together in the most pleasant way, moving her legs, without effort. Everyone was there, even the ugly gray.
"No it's not a turkey," said the old duck, "just see how pretty she is moving her legs as he holds himself upright, he is my own child, it really is very pretty, if one looks closely at it off, Quack, quack, now come with me I want to take you into the world, run into the duck yard;. but always close to me or someone can you tread, and beware of the cat. "
So they came into the duck yard. There was a terrible noise, two families were fighting over the remains of an eel, which was attached to the end of the cat.
"You see, my children, as is the way the world," said the mother duck, the bill was wiped for them to love roasted eels. "Now you use your legs," she said, "keep together, and bow to the old duck, do you see here. It is the most noble of all birds present, and is of Spanish blood, for their graceful appearance and manners accounts. Lo and behold, she has a red rag around his leg, which is an extremely pretty, and the biggest award, may have a duck.
Place your feet inside, a well-educated duckling always keeps his legs wide apart, like his father and mother, to look like! Now you can prevent neck and says Rapp. ""
And they were doing when they heard. But the other ducks that were on the court looked at her and said loudly: "Just to see, now we have another brood, as if there were not enough of us already, and Pooh How ugly that it is! We will not tolerate it, "and immediately one of the ducks flew at him and bit him in the neck.
"Leave him alone," said the mother, "he does not harm anyone."
"Yes, but he's so big and so strange-looking and therefore he will be teased."
"These are beautiful children, our good mother," said the old duck with the red rag around his leg. "Everybody is pretty much except one, and that has succeeded not good. I wish it could almost be hatched again"
"This can not be, please contact your highness," said the mother. "Certainly, it is not pretty, but he is a very good child, and swims like the other, in fact somewhat better. I think he is like all the others grow in time and may look smaller. He stayed so long in the egg shell that is the cause of the difference, "and she scratched the duckling's neck, and ran all over his body. "Besides," she added, "he is a drake, I think he will be very strong, so it does not matter so much, he is on his way to fight through."
"The other ducks are very pretty," said the old duck, "pray make yourself at home, and when an eel head, you can bring him to me."
And accordingly, they were at home.
But the poor duckling, the last one had come out of its egg shell, and who was so ugly, was bitten, pecked, and teased by both ducks and chickens. "It's so big," said it all. And the turkey that had come into the world, with spurs on, and so he thought Kaiser had puffed himself out like a ship in full sail, and marched up to the ducklings all red with passion. The poor little thing hardly knew what to do, he was in despair because he was so ugly, and because he was the ridicule of the barnyard.
Thus passed the first day, and then issues got worse, the poor little thing was despised by all. His brothers and sisters behave unfriendly, and were constantly saying: "The cat you get, you evil creature" The mother said, "Oh, you were only far away!" The ducks bit him, the chickens pecked at him, and the girl who should feed the birds came to him. He ran over the hedge, the little birds in the bushes were horrified. "That's because I'm so ugly," thought the duckling and closed his eyes, but he went on. At last he came to a wide moor, where some wild ducks lived here he was up all night so tired and so bleak. On the morning of the wild ducks were flying, and saw her new companion. "Pray who are you?" she asked, and our little duckling turns into all directions, and greeted them as politely as possible.
"You really are extremely ugly," said the wild duck, "but not about us not care if you do not marry into our families." Poor thing! He had never intended to marry, he only asked permission to lie among the reeds and drink the water from the bog.
Since he was two full days on the third day came two wild geese, or rather Ganter, who not long out of their egg shells, which had for their impertinence accounts.
"Hark ye," she said, "you're so ugly that we as infinitely good;? Are coming you go with us, and a migratory bird to another moor, not far from this some love, sweet, wild geese, how beautiful creatures as ever said. "hissing noise" Are you really make your way to your fortune, you're so ugly. "
Bang! a gun was all at once, and the two wild geese were curious dead in the reeds, the water was red with blood, Bang! a gun went, flew all the flocks of wild geese from the wetlands, and follows another report.
There was a large hunting party: the hunters lay in wait everywhere, some were even sitting in the trees, whose branches stretched far over the vast marsh. The blue smoke rose through the dense trees like a fog, and was scattered, as it fell over the water, the dogs splashed through the mud, reeds and rushes bent in all directions-how frightened the poor little duck was! He turned his head and thought to hide it under his wing, and in a moment a terrible looking dog was close to him, his tongue hanging out of his mouth, his eyes glistened anxious. He opened wide his jaws at the sight of our ducklings, he showed his sharp white teeth, and splash, splash! he was away, away, without hurting him.
"Well, let me be thankful," he sighed, "I am so ugly that not even a dog will eat me."
And now he was still shot while the shooting continued in the reeds, the following shot.
The noise could not stop until late in the day, and even then the poor little thing did not dare move, he waited several hours before he saw around him, and then proceeds from the moor as fast as he ran. He ran across fields and meadows, but the wind was so high that he had some difficulties procedures.
Towards evening he reached a hovel, so miserable that it is not known to fall on the page, and are therefore remained. The wind was blowing, so that our poor little thing was on his tail to support, to stand against them, but it got worse and worse. He then noticed that the door had lost one of its hinges and hung so much wrong, he could crawl through the cracks in the room, which he did.
In this room, an old woman lived with her cat and her hen, and the cat, which she called her son, she knows how to purr back, and, indeed, he himself could emit sparks when stroked the wrong direction. The hen had very short legs, and was therefore called "cuckoo Shortleg," she laid a very good eggs, and the old woman she loved like her own child.
The next morning noticed the new guest was, the cat started to meow, and the hen to cluck.
"What's going on", "asked the old woman to look around, but the eyes were not good, so she took the little duckling a fat duck that had lost their way." This is a capital catch, "she said, "I'm going to duck" eggs, if not a drake: We have to try it. "
And was positioned so the duckling to the one for three weeks, but no eggs, made their appearance.
Now the cat was the master of the house, and the hen was mistress, and she always used to say: "We and the world" for themselves, not just half of the world, but also to be by far a better idea half. The duckling thought it was possible to have a different opinion, but that would not allow the hen.
"Can you lay eggs?" she asked.
"No!"
"Well, then hold your tongue."
And the cat said: "Can you purr your back can you?"
"No!"
"Well, then you should have no opinion, speak if reasonable persons."
And the duckling sat alone in the corner and was in very bad humor, but he happened to think of the fresh air and sunshine, and these thoughts gave him a strong desire to swim again, that he could not help him to say, the chicken .
"What's wrong?" said the hen. "They have nothing to do, and ponder why these fantasies: either add eggs, or purr, then you will forget them."
"But it's so delicious to swim," said the duckling, "so delicious, when the water close over his head, and throw yourself on the floor."
"Well, this is a strange kind of pleasure!" said the hen. I think you have to be crazy. Do not talk about myself, ask the cat he most reasonable animal I know is, whether to swim or to the bottom of the water falling. Ask our mistress, the old has-no one in the world wiser than they, do you think they would like to take in swimming, and the waters closed over his head? "
"You do not understand me," said the duckling.
"What we do not understand! So you think is smarter than the cat, and the old woman to speak not of myself. Do not want something, child, but for all the kindness you showed, thanks. You are not put in a warm room, and you do not have the benefit of society, from which one can learn something? But you're a fool, and it is tedious to have something to do with you. Believe me, I wish you all the best . I tell you disagreeable things, but it's true that real friendship shown. Come on, give yourself time to learn the hard whisper, or to lay eggs. "
"I think I'll go out into the world again," said the duckling.
"Now go," replied the hen.
So the duckling left. He swam on the surface of the water, he threw himself under, but all the animals past him because of his ugliness. And the autumn came, the leaves yellow and brown, the wind caught her and they danced on the air was very cold, the clouds were sitting hard by hail or snow, and the Raven on the hedge and croaked:-the poor little thing was certainly not very pleasant!
One evening, was just as the sun set with unusual splendor, there was a large flock of beautiful birds out of the bushes, the duckling had never seen anything so beautiful, its plumage was of a snowy white, and she had long, slender necks. They were swans, they encountered a singular reputation for its long, glorious wings and flew away from these cold regions to warmer countries across the open sea. They flew so high, so high! and were the little ugly duckling feel so strange, he turned around and around in the water like a water wheel, strained his neck to look after them, and sent a such a loud scream and strange, that it almost frightened himself.-Ah! he could not forget the noble birds! the happy birds! When he saw her no more, he fell to the bottom of the water, and when he stood again, was almost beside himself. The little thing did not know what were the names of birds, not knowing where they flew, but he loved how he never loved, he did not envy them, provided he could never have dreamed of such beauty loves for himself, he would were very satisfied when the ducks in the duck yard, however, had endured his company the poor ugly creature!
And the winter was so cold, so cold! The Duckling had to swim around in circles in the water, to keep it from freezing, but every night of the opening, in which he swam always smaller; it so that the crackling crust of ice froze, the duckling had to make good use of his legs, completely prevent the water from freezing, at last, tired out, he was stiff and cold in the ice.
Passed early in the morning by a farmer who saw him, the ice broke into pieces with his wooden shoe, and took him home to his wife.
He again, the children would play with him, but thought our duckling, she wanted to tease him, and jumped into his horror in the milk-pail, so that the milk was spilled in the room: the good woman cried, clapping hands, he flew from there into the pan where the butter was kept, and from there out into the meal-barrel, and again, and then, how strange he looked!
The woman screamed and hit him with the tongs, the children ran races with each other trying to catch him, and laughed and cried as well. It was good for him that the door was open, he jumped from the bushes in the snow and lay there like a dream.
But it would be too sad to all the trouble and hardship that, subject to suffer, while the severity of the winter, he started you on a moor in the reeds, when the sun will shine again was referred, sang the larks, and beautiful spring was returned.
And again he shook his wings. They were stronger than before, and carried it forward quickly, and before he knew it, he was standing in a large garden where the apple trees in full bloom, where the lilacs their fragrances sent down, and hung their long green branches down in the winding channel. Oh! everything was so beautiful, so full of the freshness of spring! And from the thicket came three beautiful white swans. They showed their feathers so proud and swam so easy, so easy! The Duckling knew the splendid creatures, and was seized with a strange melancholy.
"I will fly them to the royal birds!" he said. "They will kill me because I was so ugly, I thought, I approach them, but it does not matter, are better killed by them as to the ducks, chickens pecking by the girl, bitten the feeds came poultry, and so much suffering during the winter have! "He flew into the water and swam towards the beautiful creatures they saw him and shot at him. "Just kill me," said the poor animal, and he bowed his head low and expected death, but what he saw in the water?-He saw it its own form, not that of a clumsy, ugly, gray bird, it was that of a swan.
It does not matter to have been born in a duck yard, if you hatched from a swan's egg.
The good creature felt really increased through all difficulties and adversities he had experienced. He was now able to properly understand his own happiness and the greater swans swam round him and stroked him with their beaks.
Not an ugly duckling but a swan! Some small children were called out to run around in the garden, they threw bread and corn into the water, and the most recent: "There is a new one!" The other said, "Yes, there are a new swan!" and they clapped their hands and danced around. They ran to her father and mother, bread and cakes were thrown into the water, and everybody said: "The new one is the best, so young and so beautiful!" and the old swans bowed before him. The young swan felt so ashamed, and hid his head under his wing, he hardly knew what to do, he was not too happy, but proud, because a good heart is never proud.
He recalled how he had been persecuted and ridiculed, and he heard every now say that he was the most beautiful of all birds. The lilacs bent their branches to him low in the water and the sun was so warm and bright, he shook his feathers, stretching his slender neck, and said in the joy of his heart: "How little I dreamed of so much happiness, If I was the ugly duckling! "
